SONAR WP5 | Acquisition of Swiss affiliated research records

Purpose

SONAR is an archive of scholarly publications in preparation. It intends to collect, promote and preserve the publications of authors affiliated with Swiss public research institutions.

One aspect of the SONAR project aims at assessing the feasibility of a pipeline for automatically retrieving publications of researchers affiliated to Swiss institutions, from third-party international databases. Text mining was used for mapping Swiss institutions in the affiliation metadata of all Swiss related bibliographic records, gathered from CrossRef, MEDLINE, PubMed Central, and Unpaywall (almost 500,000 records).

Evaluation of acquisition accuracy

A methodological evaluation, with a subset of Swiss institutional repositories, shows a potential improvement for coverage of between 30% and 50%, including numerous Open Archives full-texts. The complete study is available here.

Data

DOIs acquisition via the API

For each investigated Swiss institution, the complete list of retrieved DOIs can be accessed via the API. Find your institution in the list, and check the URL call. Output is json formatted.

Complete records acquisition via FTP download

Two versions of each dataset are accessible via FTP download: "light" and "complete (ftp://candy.hesge.ch/SONAR). In the SONAR FTP repository, light files provides, for an institution, all retrieved DOIs, along with their Open Access status and publication year (collected from Unpaywall). Complete files (up to 1Go) provide, for an institution, all retrieved DOIs, along with their records in CrossRef, MEDLINE, and Unpaywall (when applicable).

Feedback is welcome

In order to assess the quality of our results and improve the overall process, your cooperation would be most welcome. Here is how you could help:

• Retrieve the list of publications obtained for your institution.
• Do a comparative analysis between the provided list and your own records (baseline: May 2020).

Here is the information we are interested in:

1. How many publications provided by the SONAR retrieval process are already registered in your institutional repository or in your internal publication database?
2. How many new publications does SONAR provide?
3. How many are missing?
4. What is the procedure you apply in order to perform the comparison?
